Using Ma’aser Money

Question:

Hi, my parents struggle to make ends meet and I've been giving them my ma’aser money (10% tithe of earned income). For for a long time my mother has wanted to buy me the gift of a good quality mixer to knead Challah dough. She recently bought one with the ma’aser money that I gave her – she’d been "saving up" my ma’aser money to buy this for me, since she couldn’t afford to by me one without using this money. Is it okay to accept this gift? On the one hand it might be okay since the money I give no longer belongs to me, and my parents are free to do what they want with it. However, receiving a present from my own ma’aser feels “not right”. Should I accept it? Looking forward to your response, and thanks in advance.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

It is absolutely okay for you to take the gift - in fact, you are doing the most incredible chesed (loving-kindness) by taking it as you are allowing your mother to give something to you. May God bless you that you are always able to give to others!
