To Compete or Not?

Question:

I attend public high school and am on my school's athletic team. The competition schedule shows that one of the biggest competitions is on Yom Kippur. Though not very observant I have always gone to Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services. I know that if I attend the competition I will get a good score, which will also help with getting into college. Please advise me what should it do?! Thank you

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

While I truly empathize with your dilemma there is really only one answer and that is not to compete. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year and it is also a day that the Heavens are wide open to receive our prayers and our requests. Personally, I would say that you should miss the competition and go to Services as you have done each year, since doing the Will of God can only benefit you.
