A Light Unto the Nations

Question:

Hi, Can you please explain the idea of the Jewish People being a "Light unto the Nations"? How does this concept fall into play considering the overall purpose of this world? Thank you.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

It is true that we are commanded as national unit to be a "light unto the nations" but the only way that we can possibly reach such a level is by all of us individually reaching upwards towards God. That means that each and every one of us has to work hard to retain a sense of our spiritual persona in order to be able to turn ourselves into role models for those around us. How does one go about doing that? By working on our interpersonal relationships - by making sure that we are kinder, more thoughtful and gentler people. If we can succeed at doing that then we will truly become a light unto the nations. It is a position of great responsibility but the spiritual rewards are commensurate to the responsibility.
