Destiny

Question:

Shalom Rabbi, is there a concept of an individual's personal destiny? If there is, how much can a person influence his/her own destiny?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

God has given the individual free will in which he or she is able to perfect themselves or corrupt themselves. This means that one's own spiritual/ethical fate is in one's own hands. However the outside circumstances, such as place of birth, family, wealth etc. are in the hands of God and He has plans for each individual. Now depending on how the person decides in any particular situation, God, like a chess grandmaster, will move the other pieces around in response to the individual's free will.
