HaGomel Prayer

Question:

I just got back from a great vacation in New Zealand and Australia. It has been suggested that I should bench gomel on Shabbat. What's the meaning of benching gomel and how/why does it apply to this instance?

HaGomel is the prayer that is recited by a person after they have been in a life-threatening situation. The Talmud defines travelling over the sea as being dangerous. Therefore people recite the Blessing after having taken a transatlantic flight. The word "bentsch" is a Yiddish word and it means to bless. To "Bentsch Gomel" means to say the blessing HaGomel".
