Which is the Correct NameQuestion: Lechvod Harav, I was reading in a sefer that a person has a name from the side of holiness and a name from the side of impurity and depending on how he acts that's the name he will be fullfilling. Is his Jewish name the name from the side of purity and he has a totally different name that we don't know about or is this different sides of the same name.... I know that this is a kabbalistic idea but any clarity on it would be appreciated. Thank you. Bechvod rav, Leah AskTheRabbi.org answered: The Sages say that a person actually has four names. The one given to him by God, one given by his parents, the third is the name given to him by his friends and the last one is the name he builds for himself during his life. Is it possible to identify the different names? Not really. What we have to do is to try and match up the name that God gives us to our actions in this world. I do not really know if the Rabbis are referring to four seperate names, but I think that that is somewhat unlikely. I think that it makes more sense to imagine that the name remains the same in all cases, rather, it is the essense of the name that is being discussed. |
