Kaddish for a Friend

Question:

Can I say Kaddish for the year for a friend who just passed away? Is it beneficial to her soul?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Yes, it is very beneficial to her soul for someone to recite Kaddish. Optimally if a family member can recite it that would be best but if not someone else can. If your parents are still alive it is correct to ask their permission before taking on the obligation to recite Kaddish. Permission is necessary even if only one of your parents is still alive.
