Having Guns and Self Defense

Question:

1. Does the Torah forbid owning a gun?

2. Is it wrong according to the Torah to kill an armed robber that is threatening to kill you or your wife if you have a gun?

3. Is it wrong according to the Torah to obtain a gun for security of your family? Thanks.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

1. No, not in theory as long as it is looked after carefully and is not accessible to anyone other than the person who owns it and has a license for it.

2. No, it is not wrong. Assuming that there it is no alternative it absolutely permissible to kill someone who is threatening to kill you or your loved ones.

3. No, if there is a real need then it is permissible to do so although it may be advisable for the family to move to a safer locale.
