The Sanhedrin was the Jewish "Supreme Court" until the destruction of the Second Temple. It judged the most serious cases and consisted of seventy judges.
Napoleon Bonaparte tried to reestablishe the Sanhedrin in order for him to command the respect of the Jewish People and to encourage assimilation. Fortunately, he was not successful.
