Sanhedrin II

Question:

Who were the Sanhedrin? What was their function? When and why did the Sanhedrin leave chamber of the hewn stone before the destruction of the temple in 70AD?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The Sanhedrin was the Jewish "Supreme Court" until the destruction of the Second Temple. It judged the most serious cases and consisted of seventy judges. The judges who sat on the Sanhedrin were considered among the greatest scholars of the generation. The reason that they left the Chamber of Hewn Stone was because it would have been suicidal to stay as the Romans would have massacred them all.
