Shabbat Nachamu

Question:

What exactly is Shabbat Nachamu (Shabbat of comfort) about? What does it help to read about the comfort to come when it hasn't happened yet? We have been reading this for years so what is the comfort of reading Nachamu? Thanks!

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Shabbat Nachamu is a name for the Shabbat following Tisha B'Av. The whole concept that good prophecies will eventually take place is a source of comfort. After the destruction of the Temple we need to understand and internalize the fact that after the bad there will be good. It is true that we have been waiting for a very, very long time for it to happen but we are comforted with the knowledge that God promised us that it will be very good, and this ensures that it has to happen. May we merit to witness this redemption very, very soon.
