Celebrating Shabbat First Time

Question:

I'm thinking about celebrating this coming Shabbat. What am I supposed to do? What am I not supposed to do?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The Sabbath is the day that symbolizes the culmination of the creation and its spiritual dimensions. Due it its intense spirituality the laws surrounding it are very complex and not easy to be taught and explained through the forum of email. The simplest thing to do is to read the chapter entitled "Who invented the weekend anyway?" in Rabbi Mordechai Becher's book Gateway to Judaism. Rabbi Becher manages to encapsulate the majesty of the Sabbath and give the reader a taste of what an authentic Sabbath is.
