Why Eat Sufganiyot (Donuts) with Jelly Filling?

Question:

We ate a Chanuka dinner last night with all the fixings, and the discussion came up as to why donuts. We think because of them being fried in OIL, thus the oil used for lightening the candles. However why Jelly donuts? Thanks and have a great holiday!
