Davening

Question:

Dear Rabbi, I heard of a posture assumed by Talmudic students called "Davening." I'm not certain about the spelling. Would you kindly elaborate on this point? Thank you very much.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Davening is not a posture – it is the Yiddish word for prayer. When someone is "davening" they are praying. Jews pray three times a day (morning, afternoon and night) - for men this is normally done with a quorum of ten. You might, however, be referring to the Silent Prayer - which is usually referred to as Shemone Esrei or Tefillat Amida (standing prayer). This prayer is said while standing with both feet together and facing Jerusalem.
