Yom Ha'Atzmaut

Question:
In planning a Yom Ha'Atzmaut program, we were told that there is a tradition of lighting candles. Is that true, and if so, what is the ceremony like? How many candles? Thank You

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Lighting candles always adds a more spiritual dimension which I assume is why it is done on Yom Ha'atzmaut. I do no think that there is a number that is more correct to light than any other but, seeing as how this year is the sixtieth Yom Ha'atzmaut, it might be appropriate to light six candles - one candle for every decade.
