Vegan Food

Question:

I bought some 100% vegan food without any hechsher (symbol or certificate stating that it is kosher). Is it kosher? If not – why not?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Non-supervised vegan food should not be eaten. There are many other dimensions of Kashrut that must be taken into account – not just whether meat and milk products are not being used. For instance, all leafy vegetables are infested with bugs that according to Jewish Law are forbidden to eat. They must be cleaned properly. There is also a problem with having a non-Jew cook the food without some kind of input from a Jew and some kind of supervision over the cooking process.
