Eve

Question:

What is the meaning of the name “Eve”?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Early at night. Just kidding.

Eve in Hebrew is Chava - based on the word chai which means "life" - and the verse states that she was named this because she was the mother of all humanity. It is a beautiful name and is used frequently even today amongst Jews and non-Jews alike.

Just as mankind was created as one unit – Adam and Eve – and they actualized their potential to begin a “brave new world”, likewise each individual is to be viewed in this lofty way as being an entire universe. Our sages teach that “whoever saves one life it is as if he has saved an entire world”.
