Shabbat Times

Question:

When does Shabbat begin and end in places outside of Israel? According to Jerusalem time, or according to local time?  I live in Australia, and personally think that the religious time zones should be centered on Jerusalem, since time zones are man-made.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

With regards to all practical application of Jewish Law times are defined by the place that a person is in and not by Jerusalem. Shabbat begins at sunset and ends at nightfall. That means for example that Shabbat in Australia will begin and end before it does in Israel, while in the USA it will both begin and end after Israel.
