DNA Test – am I Jewish?

Question:

I want to know if I am Jewish. Will a DNA test help? Are there any written ancestry sources?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

DNA is not an acceptable way of proving whether anyone is Jewish or not. According to Jewish Law a person is Jewish if their mother is Jewish. I think that if you want to try and find out more information some of the best resources are Yad Vashem (the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem) and the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. The URL of Yad Vashem is: http://www.yadvashem.org/ and the Diaspora museum is: http://www.bh.org.il
