Meaning of God's Names

Question:

When and why are the different Hebrew names for God used?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The different Names of God indicate different facets of Him. For example the Name of God that is spelled yud heh vav heh can spell out three different words (by doubling some of the letters) which are past, present, and future in Hebrew and refers to the fact that God exists above and beyond time. The Name "El" refers to the strength of God. The Name Elohim refers to that facet of God that is found in the more physical dimensions of the world.
