Negel Vasser – Morning Washing

Question:

What is the reason for washing negel vasser in the morning? What is the proper way to do it?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The reason for washing hands in the morning is to remove the residue of Spiritual Impurity from the night. The Code of Jewish Law writes that a person should hold the vessel in his right hand and fill it with water. When it is full it should be transferred to the left hand. The water is then poured alternately over the right hand and the left hand three times. The water should be enough to wash up to and including the wrists, if there is insufficient they should be washed up to the knuckles. There are Authorities that are of the opinion that the water should be poured over the hands four times. The reason is that there is a possibility that the first rinsing removes any spiritual impurities and only afterwards can the hands be washed the prerequisite three times. In all cases when washing ones hands one should leave ones fingers slightly spread out in order that the water can reach the insides of the fingers.
