Question:

Hello. I'm a Jewish woman in her mid-20’s. I was not raised as an observant Jew but I feel a very strong connection to Judaism and I'd like to explore it further. What practices can I incorporate in my daily life to become more religious without making any drastic leap? Thank you.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

Although it is a very personal decision as each person is unique, nevertheless, I would suggest that perhaps you consider starting off your day by ritually washing your hands and by reciting the “Shema”.

The Shema is a verbal declaration of Judaism’s belief in an ethical Monotheism. It has been a central statement of Jewish ideology throughout history and a Torah mitzvah.

Washing hands upon wakening in a specific manner is a rabbinical mitzvah that serves to start the day on the right hand (sorry!) with cleanliness and preparation for a happy and successful day.

I intentionally suggested these two ideas since they are easy, significant and can be done before starting your day and therefore not interfere with your daily routine. Hopefully they will add and enhance your daily life and you will continue to grow in observance at your own comfortable pace.
