Keeping Kosher in the Army

Question:

Rabbi, I am Jewish and in the U.S. military. I am set to deploy out in a few days but my problem is that keeping kosher will be impossible, and I can't bring a year's supply of food with me. Am I permitted to eat non kosher food during times of war?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

As far as I am aware there are provisions (pun intended) made for Jewish soldiers who want to eat Kosher food. I would recommend that you speak with the Rabbi in charge of the Jewish soldiers and try to find out what is available. If there is no way to supply Kosher food in the place that you are being deployed to I would recommend that you do your best to stick with food that is not obviously non-Kosher such as meat. I also think that it would be a very good idea if you speak with the Rabbi in the army to discuss your options with him.

May God guard you and watch over you and may you come back safe and sound!
