Gates of Jerusalem

Question:

How many gates are there for the walled section of Jerusalem – i.e. the “Old City”?

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

There are seven open gates and one sealed gate.

The open gates are:

  •        New Gate
  •        Damascus Gate
  •        Herod’s Gate
  •        Lion’s Gate
  •        Dung Gate
  •        Zion Gate
  •        Jaffa Gate

The Jaffa Gate is the most known because it’s the largest gate and is located at a large plaza and is the widest gate. It leads outward in the direction of the city of Tel Aviv – Jaffa, which is the source of the name of this gate.

The 8th gate, which is presently sealed, is called the Gate of Mercy. In Jewish tradition, this is the gate through which the Mashiach will enter Jerusalem.
